The term “Stay-Cation” doesn’t just mean soaking the sun up in your own backyard. Thanks to all of the amazing Wisconsin State Parks, you can go on the exploration of a lifetime without even having to leave the state! Here are some parks offering fun summer activities.

1.  Governor Nelson State Park 一 Waunakee

If animal watching is your goal, Governor Nelson State Park might be your best bet! Not only is this a pet friendly, day-use park, but this beautiful landscape is home to some of the best bird observing in the state! This park is located on Lake Mendota, just outside of our State Capitol. Feel free to go for a swim, but stay sharp! You never know when a river otter might pop up to see if you have any snacks to share.

2.  Lakeshore State Park 一 Milwaukee

Did you know you can visit a state park while still being in the heart of the city? This might just be the perfect “getaway” for people who are hesitant to go completely off the grid. Here you can kayak, fish and boat and you’ll still be able to make your 6:30 dinner reservation too.

3. Yellow River Fishery Area 一 Cumberland

Just like the name implies, Yellow River Fishery is a gorgeous spot for fishing, hunting and trapping. But don’t worry, if these aren’t the outdoor activities you prefer, there is still plenty to do at this scenic park. This park boasts a beautiful hiking trail, as well as seasonal berry picking so you can snack along the way!

4. Willow River State Park 一 Hudson

Determined to see a natural waterfall while you’re visiting a park? Willow River State Park is the perfect place to do just that. Take the perfect picture while looking over this gorgeous landscape thanks to a “Selfie Station” provided by the parks to help you share their beauty with your followers. But if a waterfall isn’t enough reason to get you out to Willow River, the expansive park features a sandy beach, beautiful prairie remnants and a nature center where you can meet wild animals!

5. Peninsula State Park 一 Fish Creek

Peninsula State Park may be one of the more “well known” locations on our list, but it isn’t without good reason! If you haven’t seen the gorgeous bluffs and beaches that this park has to offer, you’re missing out on some of the greatest views in the state. Aside from the traditional activities of a park, you can spend your time viewing professional outdoor theater performances throughout the summer, or spend your time on their 18-hole golf course.

May your next “Stay-Cation” be adventurous, educational and filled with wonder.  Happy Exploring!
